SMAGUA 2025 is about innovation, efficient management, sustainability, training and international markets

2024-06-14

The second in-person meeting of the SMAGUA Organizing Committee took place in Zaragoza, and is comprised of the leading organizations and companies in the water sector. This meeting marked the first participation of Carlos Arrazola Martínez, President of the Ebro River Basin Authority (CHE), as President of the Organizing Committee. The session was held at Zaragoza City Hall, where the Councilor for Urban Planning, Infrastructure, Energy, and Housing, Víctor Serrano Entío, extended a warm welcome, emphasizing the crucial importance of efficient water cycle management in the city, as well as Zaragoza's alignment with SMAGUA.

During the meeting, Julio López, Urban Planning Coordinator, presented a detailed report on water supply in Zaragoza, highlighting the significant reduction in per capita water consumption in recent years, an achievement that reflects the city's commitment to sustainability and efficient water resource use.

SMAGUA has presented very encouraging participation figures, with a notable increase in the number of confirmed companies compared to the last edition. Key sectors such as dosing pumps, instrumentation, water treatment, and valves have experienced an increase in their exhibition presence, anticipating that SMAGUA 2025 will maintain its leading position in the water sector, guaranteeing maximum efficiency as a professional event, showcasing cutting-edge technology, and facilitating the exchange of specialized knowledge.

The technical sessions were a major highlight of the event, with the participation of several organizing associations and institutions, including the Ebro River Basin Authority (CHE), the Spanish Association of Water Supply and Sanitation (AEAS), the Water Club, the Aragonese Water Institute (IAA), ZINNAE, the Iberian Association of Trenchless Technology (IbSTT), Altap, FEREBRO (Federation of Irrigation Communities of the Ebro Basin), Aeryd, and Adeagua, among others. These organizations presented a variety of key topics, such as regulatory challenges, urban sanitation, wastewater treatment, water governance, the implementation of new technologies, waste management, the circular economy, groundwater, and more. All of these topics, combined with the caliber of the speakers, ensured top-tier international conferences for SMAGUA's professional attendees.

Among the announced awards, the Efficient Water Cycle Management Award stands out. Sponsored by the Government of Aragon and the Aragonese Water Institute, this prize money is intended to be reinvested in a project related to the water cycle. In addition to the already prestigious Technical Innovation Awards, the Water Infrastructure Award will be presented, and innovative projects promoted by universities and technology centers will be recognized with the Research Award.

Furthermore, SMAGUA 2025 is working to internationalize the leading water-related event in Southern Europe. To this end, direct actions are being developed with various stakeholders in countries throughout the Mediterranean region and the Americas. An example of this is the international meeting coordinated by the Spanish Confederation of Employers' Organizations (CEOE) and supported by the European Union, thanks to the invitation and management of numerous industry stakeholders who will hold hundreds of meetings during the event.

This 2025 event will be especially significant as it coincides with SMAGUA's 50th anniversary. The celebrations will begin in November 2024, commemorating the first edition in 1974, then known as the "Biennial Monographic Water Exhibition," and will culminate with a commemorative event during the exhibition.

SMAGUA will be held from March 4 to 6, 2025, coinciding with the fourth edition of SPAPER, the International Exhibition of Machinery and Equipment for Pulp, Paper, and Board, and with the third edition of ExpoFimer, the International Renewable Energy Maintenance Exhibition, on March 5 and 6. The convergence of these events enhances their appeal, creating synergies that have been met with great interest by the members of the organizing committee.
